Sires Talks Economy in Final Freight Panel Hearing

(Washington, D.C.)- Congressman Albio Sires joined his colleagues at the final hearing conducted by the specially appointed “Panel on 21st Century Freight Transportation.”  The ad-hoc subcommittee has met over the past six months to examine the role freight transportation plays in the U.S. economy and how the federal government can work to increase the efficiency, safety, and security of our critical transportation network.

In the panel’s final hearing, entitled “Funding the Nation’s Freight System”, Congressman Sires pressed witnesses to explain the consequences for our economy if Congress fails to identify robust sources of funding for transportation infrastructure projects.

“The Panel on 21st Century Freight Transportation has spent the past six months focusing on the needs of our nation’s freight network, so it’s fitting that the final hearing highlights the serious funding gaps we face simply to keep our roads in a state of good repair,” said Congressman Sires. “I can’t understate the importance of this: our freight network is America’s economic competitive edge in a global economy.  Our ability to move goods quickly and efficiently remains the envy of the world, but if we fail to make smart investments right now, we will be outcompeted.”

The panel is expected to issue a final report to Congress on its findings in the coming weeks.
