Sires’ Statement on Trump’s Plan to Abandon the Iran Nuclear Agreement
(Washington, DC) – Rep. Albio Sires (D-NJ), Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee released the following statement in response to reports that President Trump is considering withholding certification for the Iran Nuclear Agreement, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA):
“I have long supported efforts to pursue a peaceful path to curb Iran’s nuclear ambitions and voiced my deep skepticism that the agreement itself would be able to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. However, since its implementation I have argued that we need to be doing everything we can to enforce the agreement to its fullest extent, including conducting the most stringent and intrusive inspections to verify that Iran is compliant with the agreement and unable to skirt the parameters undetected. We also need to work with our allies and partners around the world to hold Iran accountable for its non-nuclear transgressions.
Any effort to change the deal has to be comprehensive and thoughtful. The President should listen to his military experts and advisors when they say that enforcing this deal is in the national security interest of the United States.”
