Sires’ Resolution Disapproving Russia’s Inclusion in Future Group of Seven Summits Passes the House of Representatives

Press Release

(Washington D.C.) – Today, Congressman Albio Sires (D-NJ) released the following statement after his bipartisan resolution, H.Res.546, disapproving Russia’s inclusion in future Group of Seven (G-7) summits until it respects the territorial integrity of its neighbors and adheres to the standards of democratic societies, passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 339-71:

“In 2014, Russia was expelled from the Group of Eight as a direct result of its aggressive actions in Ukraine and the remaining seven nations agreed several conditions that must be met before it would be allowed to participate in future summits Russia has not changed course, but has doubled down on their aggression in Ukraine and efforts to undermine democratic societies. In the wake of President Trump announcing his intention to invite Putin to next year’s G-7 summit it is more important than ever that we make it clear – the House of Representatives does not support Russia’s inclusion in the G-7 as it continues to attack us, our partners and democratic institutions around the world. I want to thank my colleagues for supporting my resolution and standing firm in the face of Putin’s aggression.”
