Members of Congress Condemn Threats Against Human Rights Defender Pierre Espérance

Washington, DC – Today, Reps. Albio Sires (D-NJ), Eliot Engel (D-NY), Michael McCaul (R-TX), Francis Rooney (R-FL), Gregory Meeks (D-NY), Andy Levin (D-MI), and Ted Yoho (R-FL) expressed solidarity with Haitian human rights defender Pierre Espérance and condemned threats made against him following his Congressional testimony in December.

“We denounce in the strongest possible terms any effort to silence, intimidate, harass, threaten, or cause harm to Pierre Espérance, a leading defender of human rights in Haiti. We value the testimony Mr. Espérance provided to the House Foreign Affairs Committee and support his right to freely express his views without fear of retribution. We call on the Haitian authorities to fully investigate any threats made against Mr. Espérance and to take necessary steps to ensure his safety.”
