Congressman Sires Urges Increased Support for Coronavirus Testing

Press Release

(Washington, D.C.) – Congressman Albio Sires (D-NJ) released the following statement urging continued support for COVID-19 testing:

“At a time when the United States has had over 120,000 deaths from COVID-19 and several states are experiencing a spike in cases, it is absolutely essential that we continue to aggressively test our communities in order to accurately understand where the virus is spreading. Congress has provided tens of billions of dollars to bolster testing efforts, meanwhile the President “jokes” about slowing testing in order to give a false sense of security about the health of our country and as much as a third of the funds we appropriated reportedly remain unspent by his Administration. Additionally, the House passed the Heroes Act more than a month ago, which included another $75 billion for testing, tracing, and treatment efforts. As he has done with so many other House-passed bills, Senator McConnell refuses to bring up the Heroes Act for a vote and drags his feet on alternative relief funding measures. It is clear that this pandemic is not behind us yet, and if we fail to maintain our mitigation efforts, we risk sacrificing all of the progress we have made since the beginning of this year. This virus is too deadly, and we cannot afford to slow down now.”
