Congressman Sires Supports Passage of Critical Water Infrastructure and Jobs Legislation
(Washington, D.C.) – Today, Representative Albio Sires (D-NJ) issued the following statement regarding his support for H.R. 1497, the Water Quality Protection and Job Creation Act, to authorize $16.7 billion for clean water infrastructure programs over the next five years:
“I am a proud cosponsor of this bill and I supported its passage out of the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee because I believe the federal government has a responsibility to help states maintain their water infrastructure. The bill invests $16.7 billion in water infrastructure over the next half-decade – and, since every $1 billion invested in water infrastructure creates or sustains nearly 27,000 jobs, this will be good for our workers as well.
“The bill directs $14 billion of that total to go to the Clean Water State Revolving Fund – a fund that provides slow-cost financing for state water infrastructure projects – which means that cities like Newark will be able to tap into more financing to help replace old water infrastructure.
“This is the first reauthorization of the Clean Water State Revolving Fund since 1987. I am proud to cosponsor it, proud to support it out of the Committee, and proud to help give New Jersey resources it can use to ensure its residents have access to clean water.”
