Congressman Sires’ Statement on Voting to End the Partial Government Shutdown

Jan 4, 2019
Press Release

(Washington, D.C.) - Congressman Sires released the following statement regarding his vote to end the partial government shutdown:

“Last night, on the first day of the 116th Congress, the House of Representatives voted on a set of bills that would end the partial government shutdown that began 13 days ago.  My colleagues and I passed a bill that would fund the Department of Homeland Security through February 8, 2019, and another bill that would fund the remaining departments through the end of the fiscal year.  These bills will help provide some stability to the hundreds of thousands of federal workers who are facing depleted savings and missed paychecks due to this shutdown.  I call on my colleagues in the Senate to pass these bipartisan bills, which were unanimously agreed to in that chamber just two weeks ago.  The American people deserve a government that works for them, not one that withholds their pay for leverage in negotiations.”
