Press Release

(Washington D.C.) – Today, Congressman Albio Sires (D-NJ) released the following statement over the President’s comments refusing to commit to a peaceful transfer of power following the results of the November election:

“The President refusing to commit to a peaceful transition of power when asked by reporters yesterday is an appalling and gross violation of our constitution. For months now, the President has made blatant efforts to cast doubt on the results of the November election in an attempt to sway public opinion towards believing the vote would be rigged against him. Nothing could be further from the truth; the only person who is actively trying to manipulate the election is the President himself. For over two centuries one of the cornerstones of our great democracy has been ensuring a peaceful transition of power between Presidents. The President’s failure to assure he will comply with this long-standing, constitutionally directed precedent is both unthinkable and unacceptable, and exemplifies just how little he cares for the United States Constitution, and the people of the United States. I am committed to upholding my oath to protect our constitution and our great nation and will stand firmly against any want-to-be tyrant who refuses to adhere to constitutional norms and responsibilities.”
