Georgetown, Guyana – Today, Congressman Albio Sires (D-NJ), Chairman of the Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, Civilian Security, and Trade, released the following statement after leading a congressional delegation to Guyana with Rep. Gregory Meeks (D-NY) and Rep. Yvette Clarke (D-NY):  

“At this critical moment for Guyana, my colleagues and I visited the country to convey our support for free, fair, and fully democratic elections on March 2, 2020. As we expressed to President Granger, opposition leader Bharrat Jagdeo, election commission members, and other stakeholders, the United States government plans to work closely with the people and government of Guyana, regardless of who wins the March election. Guyana has the potential for a very bright future and, as Chairman of the Western Hemisphere Subcommittee, I will work to deepen relations between our two countries and to support the aspirations of the people of Guyana.”
