Press Release

(Washington, D.C.) - Today, Congressman Albio Sires announced that he was elected to serve as Chairman of the Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere for the 117th Congress. Congressman Sires chaired the subcommittee in the 116th Congress and, before that, served as Ranking Member.

“I am humbled that my colleagues on the House Foreign Affairs Committee have again entrusted me with the responsibility to lead this subcommittee and I thank them for their continued support. As a refugee from Cuba, I am personally and professionally committed to deepening U.S. engagement with countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. It is an honor to represent my constituents in New Jersey’s 8th District, including those who are immigrants or have close ties to this region, and to be able to advocate for their interests in Congress.

“With Joe Biden in the White House and my friend Gregory Meeks as Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, we have a historic opportunity to bolster U.S. relations with our partners in Latin America and the Caribbean. Both leaders have shown a decades-long commitment to advancing constructive U.S. engagement in the Western Hemisphere on the basis of shared interests and mutual respect. I am eager to get to work on the urgent tasks of rebuilding our alliances, strengthening democratic institutions, and protecting human rights. I look forward to working closely with the Biden administration and my colleagues to help tackle the root causes of migration from Central America, reinvigorate our bilateral cooperation with Mexico, and address the political and humanitarian crisis in Venezuela.

The Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, Civilian Security, Migration, and International Economic Policy has jurisdiction over foreign affairs issues pertaining to the countries in South America, North America, Central America, and the Caribbean, as well as the thematic issues of international economic and trade policy, civilian security and transnational organized crime, and migration and forced displacement. Other Democrats serving with Congressman Sires on the subcommittee include Reps. Joaquin Castro (D-TX), Andy Levin (D-MI), Vicente Gonzalez (D-TX), and Juan Vargas (D-CA).

Congressman Sires was also selected to continue serving as a member of the Subcommittee on Europe, Energy, the Environment and Cyber.
