Congressman Sires Condemns “Safe Third Country” Agreements with Northern Triangle Countries

Sep 27, 2019
Press Release

(Washington, DC) – Today, Congressman Albio Sires (D-NJ), Chairman of the Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, Civilian Security, and Trade, released the following statement after the Trump Administration signed “safe third country” agreements with Honduras and El Salvador:

“The latest agreements with Honduras and El Salvador, combined with the agreement signed with Guatemala in July, effectively eliminate the right of people from the Northern Triangle to seek asylum in the United States. Honduras and El Salvador have two of the highest homicide rates in the world and completely lack the institutional capacity to handle the huge inflow of asylum petitions they are likely to receive under these new agreements. Strong-arming these countries into absorbing so many asylum-seekers will only worsen the conditions that are driving people to migrate northward. I will continue to do everything I can to oppose the Trump Administration’s counterproductive policies toward the Northern Triangle, which directly undermine U.S. interests, defy our values, and tarnish our global image.”
