Congressman Sires Condemns “Safe Third Country” Agreement with Guatemala
(Washington, D.C.) - Today, Congressman Albio Sires (D-NJ), Chairman of the Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, Civilian Security, and Trade, joined Congresswoman Norma Torres (D-CA) and thirteen other members of Congress in urging Acting Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security Kevin McAleenan to rescind the “safe third country” agreement recently signed with Guatemala.
“It is inhumane, illegal, and illogical to designate Guatemala as a ‘safe third country’ when Guatemala remains one of the most violent countries in Latin America. Forcing Guatemala to absorb so many asylum seekers would exacerbate the already precarious conditions that are prompting desperate Guatemalans to seek refuge in the United States. I stand with my colleagues in condemning this agreement and urging the administration to rescind it immediately.”
