Congressman Sires Condemns Russia’s Destabilizing Activities in Latin America
(Washington, D.C.) – Today, Congressman Albio Sires (D-NJ), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, Civilian Security, Migration, and International Economic Policy, released the following statement regarding Russia’s malign influence in Latin America:
“I am deeply concerned that Russia is expanding its malign influence in Latin America, including by increasing its support for the Maduro dictatorship in Venezuela and carrying out foreign interference operations in Colombia. In recent years, we have seen Russia provide military equipment to help Maduro repress his own citizens and conduct covert operations targeting critical infrastructure in Colombia. We know that Vladimir Putin is a tyrant who poisons his political opponents, but the impunity he has enjoyed in Russia should not extend to the Western Hemisphere.
“As I discussed with Secretary of State Blinken in yesterday’s Foreign Affairs Committee hearing, Colombia is one of the United States’ strongest allies and we must push back against the efforts of Vladimir Putin and his cronies to destabilize Colombia and other democracies in the Western Hemisphere. I was encouraged that Secretary of State Blinken shared my concerns about Russia’s malign involvement in the Western Hemisphere and I look forward to working with the Biden administration to deepen support for our allies and aggressively counter Russia’s foreign interference.”
