Congressman Sires Condemns Ortega’s Decision to Block Entry for OAS Commission

Sep 16, 2019
Press Release

(Washington, D.C.) - Today, Congressman Sires, Chairman of the Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, Civilian Security, and Trade, released the following statement in response to the Nicaraguan Government’s decision to deny access to members of an Organization of American States Commission on Nicaragua, which was scheduled to visit Nicaragua on September 16th and 17th:

“By denying access to the Organization of American States’ Commission on Nicaragua, Ortega has proven once again that he is determined to maintain power at any cost. The regime has brutally repressed its own people and continues to hold over 100 political prisoners. I stand shoulder to shoulder with the people of Nicaragua in their struggle for freedom and dignity and will continue to work with our allies to respond to these acts of authoritarianism by ratcheting up the pressure on Ortega and his cronies.”
