Congressman Sires Applauds the Biden Administration’s Designation of Temporary Protected Status for Venezuelans
(Washington, D.C.) – Today, Congressman Albio Sires (D-NJ), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere, Civilian Security, Migration, and International Economic Policy, released the following statement commending the decision by President Biden’s Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, to designate Venezuela for Temporary Protected Status (TPS):
“I applaud the decision by President Biden and Secretary Mayorkas to grant TPS for Venezuelans. Venezuela is enduring one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, which has forced an estimated 5.4 million people to flee the country. This necessary step by the Biden administration will provide critical relief to Venezuelans already in the United States.
“Last week I chaired a hearing on the Venezuela crisis in which I called for the U.S. to deepen our support for the Venezuelan people, as they continue to suffer under the Maduro dictatorship. I am thrilled that President Biden has fulfilled this campaign promise and already achieved in his first 50 days something that his predecessor refused to do for four years.”
