Congressman Albio Sires’ Statement About Cuba Referendum

Feb 25, 2019
Press Release

(Washington, D.C.) – Today, Congressman Sires released the following statement regarding Cuba’s referendum for a new constitution:

“The people of Cuba were never allowed to raise their voice in opposition to this constitutional referendum. Not only does the new constitution largely support the status quo, it continues to affirm the Communist party’s stronghold, disallowing any opposition party and therefore any voice. Cubans on the ground and abroad agree that this plebiscite is not an honest attempt at change for the people of Cuba and the government’s oppression of the opposition proves that their intentions were never for a free and transparent referendum. Any results ratifying the charter cannot be considered legitimate when press is controlled by the Communist party and the regime cracks down on dissent. I continue to support the people of Cuba in their fight for freedom and democracy. We will continue to shine a light on your struggle.”
