Chairman Sires and Ranking Member Rooney Reject Maduro’s Sham Electoral Council in Venezuela
(Washington, D.C.) – Today, Congressman Albio Sires (D-NJ) and Congressman Francis Rooney (R-FL), Chairman and Ranking Member respectively of the House Foreign Affairs Western Hemisphere Subcommittee, issued the following statement in response to the illegitimate Maduro regime naming new members to the National Electoral Council (CNE), in clear violation of the Venezuelan constitution:
“We condemn the Maduro dictatorship’s unconstitutional naming of a new electoral council, which undermines the legitimacy of any electoral process that this sham council oversees,” said Chairman Sires and Ranking Member Rooney. “The Venezuelan constitution clearly gives the National Assembly the sole authority to name members of the National Electoral Council (CNE). Maduro is once again sidestepping the country’s only democratically-elected institution in using the regime-controlled Supreme Court to handpick CNE members.
“Maduro has made clear that he intends to steal the 2020 legislative elections like he stole the 2018 presidential elections,” the members continued. “The Venezuelan people deserve free and fair elections, overseen by an independent CNE—one that allows all political parties to participate and creates the conditions necessary for the Venezuelan people to freely exercise their right to vote. If Maduro continues to impede free and fair elections, he should expect resounding rejection and further isolation from the international community.”
