Nano-Spacecraft to Soon Explore Deep Space

May 3, 2016
Did You Know?

Did you know that scientists in the not-so-distant future could be sending thousands of miniature spacecraft outside our solar system at one-fifth the speed of light?

Recently, philanthropist Yuri Milner, along with cosmologist and author Stephen Hawking and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg announced a plan to send spacecraft that are no larger than a smartphone to the nearest solar system. These nano-spacecraft would be propelled one-fifth the speed of light into space using lasers directed from Earth to go beyond our solar system and document their journeys to the Alpha Centauri solar system, which is 4.37 light-years away. This project will give scientists and researchers a better understanding of deep space and will lead to technological advances that will benefit future space exploration and the average consumer.
