Excellence in Public Service Award

On May 22, 2013 Congressman Sires received the Excellence in Public Service Award from the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association. He was introduced by Congressman Gus Bilirakis (R-FL) and was honored for his work on behalf of the Greek American community.

Bayonne Bridge

On May 20, 2013 Congressman Sires and Senator Bob Menendez joined local officials and labor leaders to announce progress on the project to raise the Bayonne Bridge to meet the demands of the 21st Century economy. Roundtable

Members of the Panel on 21st Century Freight Transportation held their second meeting today in a roundtable with the Honorable John Porcari, Deputy Secretary of the United States Department of Transportation and the Honorable Jo-Ellen Darcy, Assistant Secretary of the Army, to discuss ways the federal government can better coordinate their efforts to improve freight transportation.

(Mr./Madam) Speaker, I rise today to express my serious concern about the proposed cuts to funding for food stamps in the 2013 Farm Bill. Food stamps are critical to the health and well being of our Nation’s most vulnerable populations. In my home state of New Jersey, nearly 870,000 households rely on this benefit to feed their families. Of that number, 45 percent are children and nearly 25 percent are either elderly or disabled adults.

Should sequestration take effect my state of New Jersey would lose almost $12 million in funding for primary and secondary education- putting around 160 teacher and aide jobs at risk. New Jersey would also lose nearly $17 million in funds for about 210 teachers who help children with disabilities.

This week, a deadly tornado swept through Oklahoma, devastating the town of Moore and its surrounding areas. I am saddened over the loss of life and the destruction caused by the natural disaster, particularly those innocent lives lost in the school yard. Words cannot comfort those who lost loved ones, but as proven with Superstorm Sandy, we as a nation stand with our fellow citizens in their time of need. I will work with my colleagues from Oklahoma to make sure that the victims get the assistance they need to rebuild.
