  • (Mr./Madam) Speaker, I rise today to express my serious concern about the proposed cuts to funding for food stamps in the 2013 Farm Bill. Food stamps are critical to the health and well being of our Nation’s most vulnerable populations. In my home state of New Jersey, nearly 870,000 households rely on this benefit to feed their families. Of that number, 45 percent are children and nearly 25 percent are either elderly or disabled adults.

  • Should sequestration take effect my state of New Jersey would lose almost $12 million in funding for primary and secondary education- putting around 160 teacher and aide jobs at risk. New Jersey would also lose nearly $17 million in funds for about 210 teachers who help children with disabilities.

Voice Your Opinion

It has recently come to light that the United States National Security Agency (NSA) has been using a classified electronic surveillance program called PRISM to collect data on suspected terrorists. PRISM was publicly revealed on June 6, 2013, after classified documents about the program were leaked. PRISM was created to identify suspicious communications of targets whom analysts suspect are not U.S. citizens, however; in the process, communication data of some U.S. citizens are also collected. This has sparked debate about our civil liberties and the ongoing war on terror. As your representative, I am concerned about both protecting our nation and protecting your privacy.
